Boost the quality and efficiency of geological research

Boosting Geological Sampling with Crowdsourcing: How Finnish and Swedish Institutes Benefit from Our Innovative App

The Finnish and Swedish Geological Research Centers (GTK and SGU) have significantly enhanced their population sampling activities through our innovative app. This advancement is crucial for exploring and documenting national raw material reserves and minerals. By leveraging crowdsourcing, the app increases data accuracy and engagement, potentially sparking new developments in the mining and stone industries. Tietotalo has designed and implemented these mobile and web services, providing valuable tools for GTK and SGU to efficiently manage their national sample operations.

Efficiency and quality for national sample operations

Stone and mineral enthusiasts can save their observations in the OmaKivi and Mineral Jakten service and send them to Geological Survey’s national sample office for examination if they wish. Both applications are based on the GeoSample application framework we developed. The service is intended for everyone interested in stones and minerals, from casual observers to active enthusiasts.

The goal of the GeoSample Pro is to improve the efficiency of sample operations, the quality of samples, and to encourage especially young people to get involved in the rock and mineral hobby by offering them a natural way to produce observations. GTK and SGU annually awards the best samples with cash prizes in its own national sample competitions to encourage people.

Tietotalo designed, visualized and implemented the OmaKivi and Mineral Jakten online service and a separate mobile application based on GeoSample application framework. Both services are run on the Microsoft Azure platform. The mobile application was implemented with React Native and the web service was customized with ASP.Net Core.

Benefits – Enhancing Geological Research through Innovation and Engagement

Discover the unparalleled benefits of the GeoSample framework, designed to revolutionize the way we document and explore geological resources.

These user-friendly and customizable solutions not only enhance efficiency and engagement but also serve as powerful educational tools. By leveraging crowdsourcing, they increase the number of mineral observations and the potential for new discoveries.

Perfect for both casual observers and dedicated enthusiasts, this application seamlessly integrate with your existing systems, providing a cost-effective and impactful way to connect people with science and nature.

Crowdsourcing has emerged as a powerful tool in the modern era, harnessing the collective intelligence and enthusiasm of the public to achieve remarkable outcomes. By involving a broad audience in scientific endeavors, we can gather a vast amount of data and insights that would be impossible to obtain through traditional methods alone. The OmaKivi and Mineral Jakten services epitomize this potential by enabling stone and mineral enthusiasts to contribute their observations, significantly enhancing the scope and quality of geological research.

Socially engaging people towards science and nature not only boosts participation but also fosters a deeper connection and appreciation for the natural world. When individuals are actively involved in scientific projects, they become more aware of environmental issues and more invested in sustainable practices. This engagement is particularly impactful for young people, providing them with educational opportunities and inspiring a new generation of scientists and environmental stewards.

Through the GeoSample Pro app, users can effortlessly document their findings and share them with the Geological Survey’s national sample office. This collaborative approach not only increases the number of mineral observations but also leverages the diverse perspectives and local knowledge of the community. By making science accessible and interactive, we can drive innovation, promote lifelong learning, and encourage a culture of curiosity and discovery.
